Why put off to tomorrow what you can do today. That well known saying has been used so often that sooner or later it’s got to become imprinted in people’s sub conscious. But be careful you don’t take it too far. So what am I getting at?

Good time management technique isn’t just about getting everything done today; whatever it is so you can have plenty of spare time on your hands tomorrow. That is bad management, believe me, I’ve been there and while it works for a little while this is what I found. I thought I was being time smart. I thought with all the extra time I had I could get more accomplished. Instead though, I started to become precious with my extra time. I would ark up if unscheduled work suddenly found it’s way to my desk. Yes, I created free time but didn’t want do any work at all during it. Imagine that, I was going to my job to enjoy my free time. I eventually became bored and unhappy with my environment and became…dare I say it, unbearable for my work colleagues.

It sounds a bit drastic doesn’t it. I had to realise that prioritizing tasks plays a big part in good time management technique. When I finally realised this I made the necessary adjustments and yes, I was back!

Efficient time management means that not only can you make more money, but you can also have time left over for other activities. I have compiled a list of tips on time management techniques.

Cultivate the habit of maintaining a good appointment calendar. Schedule appointments well in advance and while scheduling, pay attention to small details like, location of the appointment and arranging the time so that you do not have to commute during the rush hour traffic.

Networked events should also find their place in your appointment calendar. This helps you gain more efficiency in coordinating your schedule with your clients.

You must decide on what your minimum billing time will be. If you do not have a minimum billing time to refer to, it is very easy to fall into time and money loss. While calculating the minimum billing time, do not omit to factor in travel time.

Keep a record of every minute that you work and not just billable hours. The time spent on tasks like administrative, training, marketing, and selling should also be accounted for, so you can study and decide where to spend more time or less. Task lists or to-do lists are great organizing tools for daily use. You can also buy one of the many software programs which come with reminders and automatic triggers, to help you remember all the important things you need to do.

If you are in the habit of listening to audio books on technical or business training, then a very effective time management technique is to listen to them while driving.

Effective time management techniques are basically tools to ensure that everything gets done, and more so, gets done on time. So, set time aside for miscellaneous tasks like billing, banking, revising the marketing strategy, and so on. Professional development continues throughout your career. But, of a good leader who talks little and listens well, when their work is done and goals are fulfilled, People will all say, we did it ourselves.

I believe that most employees at their core are very similar. Regardless of race, gender, age or religion, most have certain things in common. If we are to be a successful manager, it is imperative that we understand the human elements that allow us as managers to stay “on top of our game”. That is, understanding how people want to be treated by their manager. Here is a list of things that I believe all employees have in common when it comes to how they want to be treated.

1. Employees want to be valued.

Over fifty percent of all working Canadians that leave their jobs do so because they feel that they are not valued. Have you ever been told that you provide little or no value to the organization, been humiliated for making the wrong decision or been told that you are a liability to the company. If so, then you understand how important it is to be valued. Valuing people because they are human beings and the foundation of our company is reason enough to be ethical in our approach with people.

2. Employees want to be treated with respect.

Author Arnold Glasow said, ” The respect of those you respect is worth more than the applause of the multitude”. Many employees desire the respect of the people they work for. Respect is oxygen for the soul and when managers give it freely, it creates a positive work environment. Respecting employees gives them the freedom to perform at a high level and the incentive to work with excellence.

3. Employees want to be trusted.

My dad once told me that to be trusted is a greater compliment than to be loved. Although we as managers cannot control if employees trust us, we can control our actions toward them and we can give them our trust. While it is true that we can be taken advantage of, it is also true that trust creates the foundation of a strong relationship with our people because it allows for open communication, maintains confidences and focuses on shared goals.

4. Employees want to be appreciated.

Employees want to be appreciated for the skill and effort that they bring to the work place. Letting employees know that they matter builds their self confidence and self esteem to the point that they make decisions and take action because, they know it is right and needs to be done. As a manager, let people know that you appreciate their efforts. Publicly thank them at every opportunity and give them the credit that they deserve. As one of my mentors Warren Brent Carroll once told me, “people need to walk in the sunshine and not in the shadows”.

5. Employees want to be understood. A great inventor by the name of Charles Kettering once said, “There is a great difference between knowing and understanding. You can know a lot about something and not really understand it. The same is true about people.” As managers we can be quick to find fault with employees who don’t conform to our thought process or patterns that we know work. Sometimes our employees act differently because they have not had the advantages that we have had. As managers we ought to consider extending ourselves to them on their level and showing flexibility in our thought process. Our employees are creatures of emotions, just like us. These courses are specific and require the basic knowledge of running particular software that is necessary for specific operations. There is a variety of courses in the context of their duration and study techniques. Online courses are useful for those who want to have self-paced study of the chosen topic. These courses are available on the internet and can be taken up by anybody who wishes to learn about a particular subject of interest. These courses offer the freedom of self study in desired mode but have a deadline for completing the course so that people understand that they cannot be too slow in learning the topics. Some of these courses may also include paper handbooks or audio materials.

1. Start now, and take your time.

When you start out, remember that finding time to reach your goal probably involves changing your time priorities, setting time boundaries, and letting go of some old habits around time. This can all be disruptive at first. Give yourself and your loved ones time to adjust as you make this transition in your life.

2. Reward yourself as often as you need, consistently.

Be sure to recognize and reward the small accomplishments that move you toward your larger goal. This is very, very important! It can be easy to feel like you aren’t getting anywhere at the beginning, when you feel like all you are doing is carrying bricks. Don’t worry – Rome will begin to take shape. But in the meantime, give yourself plenty of pats on the back!

How often? Validate and reward yourself as often and as generously as you need to maintain your momentum. Whenever possible, align your rewards to reinforce your goals, as well. If this highly practical step initially challenges you, ask yourself, “What is it worth to you to meet your goals?” Chances are, it is worth the relatively modest outlay of time and healthy treats you will provide yourself. Furthermore, you will enjoy your journey far more!

3. Correct your course instead of abandoning it.

As important as it is to reward yourself, it is also very important to stick with your plan. If you notice that you are veering way off track, take time to take stock. Maybe you need to adjust your plan. It’s important to do this consciously and logistically. If you simply ignore your initial plans and change course without checking in with yourself, you erode self-trust. Instead, build your confidence for your next goal, too!
