Increase Your Productivity by Shutting Off Your Phone
Author: Jack Deal Title: Increase Your Productivity by Shutting Off Your Phone Article: I first became interested in productivity when I worked with a number of service businesses. These businesses provided some form of service; autobody repair, mechanical repair, landscaping, towing and recovery, CNC machining, etc. The basic idea was a unit of service cost so much and could be sold for so much. The more units that were produced within a given time period, the higher the percentage of productivity.
Those service businesses that were more productive were more profitable, successful and often had good growth potential. Those businesses that were not productive were always having slow sales, cash flow crunches and employee problems.
In the past 10 years productivity has become the mantra of business theorists; productive is the one word that best describes the successful company. In time I began to look at superior productivity and performance and just what factors separated the superior from the mediocre. As it turns out the line was much thinner than I thought.
This is because the current emphasis on productivity centers on ways of leveraging knowledge and technology to produce more with less and repeat the process. Those that are highly productive are often the same ones that innovate and create new methods and procedures. This is true of computer programming as well as auto repair.
But little attention, if any, is paid to those factors that have a direct negative effect on performance and productivity. Could simply addressing these negative factors instantly increase performance and production?
The answer was, surprisingly in most cases, yes. The reason is individuals and companies develop precedent and habit over a period of time. Many of these hastily arranged processes have flaws; the most glaring is a constant barrage of workplace interruptions.
An automobile technician, for instance, is five times more likely to make a mistake after an interruption than at any other time. Loss of focus translates directly into an increased error rate.
Later I was to see the effects in the younger Silicon Valley executives and managers on Technology Drive. Wired usually with several cell phones, they were constantly monitoring their incoming calls and calling back. In one sense they were no longer software engineers but phone talkers.
The ‘net net’ as it is called in Silicon Valley, was the focus and eventually psyches of those employees was to fracture and sometimes break. Constant interruptions cause good, competent managers to become bundles of nerves and creative employees feel helpless as their creativity is constantly interrupted and stymied.
The problem with phones is phone tag. To get two people free at the same moment and connected is problematic in today’s speed warped business world. So when one looks at her cell and sees it’s a call from a fellow phone tagger, the temptation is just too much to resist. The recipient excuses herself and takes the call. Welcome to the fragmented world.
The phone tag problem is eased somewhat by scheduled phone appointments but it adds a whole layer of complexity to the process. At times it is necessary to speak directly in real time and a scheduled phone appointment works great. But to be on call is a productivity nightmare.
And that is where it’s headed. If you answer the phone at 11:00 at night, you will continue to get calls at 11:00 at night. If your boss demands you do business at 11:00 at night hopefully it is in your job description or contract. By fragmenting your workday you fragment your productivity and you fragment your life.
So, go ahead and kill the goose that is laying golden eggs for you: your productivity. Take all those meaningless calls and then explain to your boss why you didn’t do such a good job because you had to take all those meaningless calls. Or something like that. Maybe she will understand.
Or perhaps it’s better to just be productive and have the boss say ‘great job!’? Jack D. How to Overcome Procrastination – Using the Law of Attraction!
Author: Anisa Aven Title: How to Overcome Procrastination – Using the Law of Attraction! Article: “Procrastination is opportunity’s assassin.”
~ Victor Kiam, American businessman, Remington Electric Razors (1926-2001)
“Oh, how I wish I could overcome procrastination! Somebody please help me stop procrastinating! But not today, I’m busy.”
Procrastination is a double-edged habit. It deserves our attention as well as our appreciation. The guilt we feel indicates that our procrastination serves as the destroyer of dreams. However, when inspired by our connection to our values it also serves as the protector against wasted energy and futile activities.
Regardless of the type of procrastination, it’s important to forgive yourself for doing the best you could do, given who you are and what you’ve learned up until this point. You are a Divine Child of God and the Truth is that it’s possible that your sensible delays were inspired according to your Divine path.
On the other hand, feeling frustrated because your lack of action has postponed your good, is a message from your higher self that what you want requires your attention and you’re not currently in alignment with its effortless fulfillment.
Let me clarify the distinction between when we can appreciate our procrastination and when we should instead kick ourselves out of lethargy.
Once upon a time, I was stuck at the Los Angeles airport with no money for my cab or shuttle ride home to Newport Beach, about 50 miles South on Pacific Coast Highway. I knew I had to get home and I had neglected (procrastinated) to call friends to arrange a ride. Then, when my flight arrived, I was really ready to get home but for some reason I sort of meandered through the airport a bit aimlessly.
I admit that because I didn’t have the money for the fare, I procrastinated finding a ride for fear of having to ride-and-run, known in other circles as dine-and-dash!
I picked up my luggage, went to the gift shop, grabbed a bag of chips and truly walked around aimlessly for an indefinite amount of time. Eventually, reality sunk in. I had to get home and even though I didn’t have the money, I had to take the shuttle.
My heart raced and my stomach ached thinking about how I would face the driver at my driveway. What would they do? Would they call the cops? Would they take a hot check so that I could cover it later?
I made a decision as I got on that shuttle that would change my life forever. I decided to manifest a miracle. I didn’t know how but I knew enough about the law of attraction to know that if I could put my attention on what I wanted while handing it over to God, that something would happen and I’d be alright.
I got on the shuttle, smiled and said hello to the man and his daughter, the single woman, and the cute elderly couple. I immediately began to pray and apply my thoughts toward a magical solution and most importantly, every time I felt fear, I handed it over to God (the big U).
The father and daughter were the first to exit, and I began to really be persistent with ‘handing it over’ as the fear came in waves. I began to feel a sense of willingness to just handle whatever happened and found myself inspired to talk with the elderly couple. They were visiting from South Africa, had a daughter my age, loved to travel and meet new people. We laughed and continued to talk as I intermittently remembered my dilemma and handed it over again and again.
The next stop was to be the hotel of my new friends but the gentleman told the driver to take me home first as they were enjoying my company. When we arrived, I turned to tell my new friends what a pleasure it was to meet them and they were talking to each other. He turned to me and said, “My dear, we have enjoyed your company so much. Please allow us to pay for your fare.”
With tears of delight and gratitude, what could I do but graciously accept?!
This was a turning point for me and my ability to succeed as a conscious creator. My procrastination in arranging a ride inspired my aimless wandering, which in turn was actually inspired by my higher intentions to succeed in truly understanding the law of attraction. I was inspired to procrastinate so that I would show up at the right time, in the right pick-up zone to meet my new friends and manifest a mini-miracle.
This is inspired procrastination. Honor the truth that sometimes there is a higher purpose for Divinely Ordered procrastination. If you are running behind schedule, you miss your exit, you meander aimlessly, etc. allow yourself the flexibility to accept that somehow this too is perfect and in alignment with what you really want.
On the other, deadly edge of the procrastinator’s sword is the fear based procrastination that will inevitably delay and destroy your dreams.
The following tools may be used to overcome this type of procrastination. You want to set yourself up for success by inspiring inspiration. Yes, using the law of attraction, you can actually inspire and aligned action.
If you postpone making the number of cold-calls necessary to succeed in your business, then you are procrastinating out of fear of success, fear of rejection, or fear of failure, for example.
If you postpone working out and eating right, then you may be procrastinating out of a sense of futility, a feeling of worthlessness, or a fear of deprivation.
If you feel guilt when you look at your procrastination tactics, then you are being called to move towards inspired action from your higher self.
To overcome procrastination here are a few practical tips:
1 – Write it down! Write everything that you must/could/should/want to do on paper; write out your high-level goals, the mini-milestones, the tasks involved, and the decisions that must be made to accomplish your goals. Then, prioritize and write down your reasons and your rewards. If it’s too big a task, then spend just 10 minutes at a time until it’s done.
2 – Chunk it down! We procrastinate eating the Elephant because it’s such a huge undertaking! Break it down into bite-sized morsels (on paper) and ask yourself what is ONE thing I can do today or right now.
3 – Use a timer set for 15 minutes. You have 15 minutes to do ONE thing on your list – pick it and do it. If you are inspired to do more, great keep going. If not, that’s okay too!
4 – Just put on your shoes! Whatever goal you have in mind starts with the first inspired action. If you want to run 6 miles, it begins with simply putting on your running shoes; nothing more, nothing less. When you are procrastinating – simply ask yourself what’s the first task? Take action on the smallest incremental item on that task. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you will be inspired to run once your running shoes are on.
5 – Reward yourself – when you accomplish each project as well as each milestone.
6 – Be human and give up perfectionism! Do it imperfect on purpose. If you procrastinate for fear of it being imperfect, get over it. An action performed imperfectly is superior to inaction performed perfectly.
To overcome procrastination using the law of attraction, use both the law of attraction and Emotional Freedom Technique.
First, launch a living vision that paves the way for inspired action then upon awareness of doubts/fears use Emotional Freedom Technique to eliminate the blocks.
A – Inspire Inspiration with a Living Vision
Launch a living vision that addresses inspired, daily action. This is a one minute exercise that will change your life forever. If you will simply imagine yourself ‘enjoying the act of taking daily consistent action towards your goal’ in a consistent, daily living vision, eventually you will be inspired to do what you are imagining.
Launching a Living Vision that you are taking daily, inspired action is a “No Fail” method! You will find yourself inspired with a passionate, connected sense of certainty and eagerness and you won’t be able to stop yourself from taking action. It will work in one way or another every time.
For example:
If you want to be a prolific writer but you procrastinate or feel that you have writer’s block, then launch the following living vision every day for 7 – 21 days and record what happens:
“Yes! I am so enthusiastic about how easy it is for me to write every day. It’s like the words just flow and most of the time I don’t even know where they are coming from. The characters inspire me to new heights and the storyline comes out of left field, jumping onto the computer screen with profound clarity and conviction. You know, I’m so grateful that it’s always been this easy for me. I have always been able to simply sit down and allow the words to flow. I have to admit that I am a prolific writer and it’s always been easy for me.”
If you want to start exercising or be more consistent with your exercise routine, then launch the following living vision every day for 7 to 21 days and see what happens:
“I love exercising and staying focused on my goals. It’s so easy for me to make this a priority. I always seem to have the energy to work out, not matter what time of the day it is. I also always seem to have the time as my life simply supports me in achieving my ideal health and fitness. I know others say they don’t have the energy or time, and I just can’t even imagine this being the case for me! I simply feel inspired to work-out regularly and the time happens easily as does having the energy within to accomplish my goals. There’s something magical that happens when I put on my work-out gear or my gym shoes, it’s like the angels practically carry me through my routine as soon as the gear touches my body. I simply put on my gear and I’m destined to a fabulous work-out that I absolutely love. And, I love the way I look and feel. I love and enjoy my body!”
Launch your own living visions to inspire inspiration and action. Allow your living vision to be a breathing, flowing, ever-evolving masterpiece of the activities that you want and desire.
B – Use Emotional Freedom Technique to overcome procrastination.
Formulate your own using the following Emotional Freedom Technique set-up phrases and positive implanting statements as prompts.
* Even though I procrastinate, I choose to love and accept myself anyway.
* Even though I am a habitual procrastinator, I lovingly support myself in taking inspired action.
* Even though I sabotage my success by procrastinating, never the less, I am pleasantly surprised at how easy it is for me to take action from this point forward.
* Even though I am afraid of success and therefore I procrastinate, never the less, I see myself easily taking inspired, consistent action.
* Even though I put off doing what I know must be done, I love, accept and forgive myself. And, I choose to easily take inspired, daily, consistent action.
* Even though I can’t seem to stop procrastinating, never the less, I am so passionate excited that I am reliable and unswerving in my commitment to take action.
* Even though I hate the fact that I keep procrastinating and I don’t know how to stop, never the less, I find myself easily focusing on the completion of small steps every day.
* Even though I feel terribly guilty for being such a procrastinator, I easily choose to chunk my projects down and just begin it now!

What To Consider Before Deciding To Move For Work
Author: Anna Stenning Title: What To Consider Before Deciding To Move For Work Article: For some graduates the looming prospect of returning home after having living away at university halls of residence can either be depressing or exciting. More so looking for a job in your local area proves more difficult than one would expect. Often, the only option for getting your foot on the career ladder can mean moving away from home permanently. My decision to look for jobs in Sudbury was because of trying to get a step ahead into the world of work.
Many graduates have experienced the woes of unemployment after graduating. Some may be unfortunate enough as to feeling confused about what they want. My own experiences of searching for jobs and applying to various placements were always a stressful time. I often felt that I was handing out my entire life details with no positive outcome. It became apparent that I needed to reconsider my options and start looking away from my local area.
Having lived in London for a number of years (during and after studying for my degree), I decided to search for a new place to live, preferably on the other end of the over ground train line. I chose to look further afield, but without the prospect of moving far up north, but near local amenities and with good transportation links. It was through my researching that I came across advertisements for jobs in Sudbury.
Even though I had had experience in moving away from my parents’ home, this was the first time that I was to make a decision on completely starting afresh and find a place to settle down. Opting to research jobs in Sudbury meant that I was looking to commit to living in Sudbury long-term. Before I could make the jump, I had to better prepare myself for what was to follow. Therefore, I began a lengthy process of researching and plenty of travelling from North London to Sudbury.
Sudbury was an unfamiliar territory for me; I had to find out more about the area. Reading website articles was not enough for me, so I took a gamble. I booked a week off from work and as I had just finished my course, I looked up rental accommodations and made a reservation for the week. This would give me the chance to see for myself what living in Sudbury would be like.
This was indeed a learning experience for me and I now know the decision to move was the right one. People looking to move away from their home may indeed find the prospect of moving very frightening and often overwhelming. There are no two ways about it but giving yourself the time to find out as much information as you can on your chosen destination.
The best way to approach this is to consider where you would like to move to, and what sort of an area would you like to live. Ask yourself whether you would prefer a quiet countryside area or a busy cosmopolitan city. With reference to employment, you should prepare a CV or seek advice from any job agencies on how to improve your job prospects. Sometimes it may help to register with the local recruitment agencies in your chosen area, prior to moving to secure yourself a position.
Once you have a clear idea of what you are looking for and have found a place that best appeals to you the following things should be considered; job market in the area, access to public transport, nearest emergency services (hospital, police station, fire station etc), local community, rental accommodation or property prices, living expenses and networking opportunities. It helps to spend a short amount of time in the area and get a better idea of what it would be like to live.
The most important point in moving is having the ability to meet new people, making new friends and settling into the town. For some this is even more daunting than actually moving which is why it is always vital to allow yourself time to think about the decision you make. Anna Stenning has researched jobs in Sudbury, having made the decision to move there in order to work on building her career. Are You Looking For A Job At Sears? This Could Help You!
Author: Kristi Ambrose Title: Are You Looking For A Job At Sears? This Could Help You! Article: Sears is one of the leading department stores in the country and it has been for quite awhile. In fact, it has even outlasted those other stores such as Boscovs and the ever popular Kaufman’s (which is now Macy’s in most places). The first retail store was opened in 1925. The store was opened in a portion of the company headquarters in Chicago, IL. The store concept was so popular that by 1927 the company had opened 27 stores in Chicago and other cities! If you want a job that is going to be stable – even in these rough economic times then you might want to consider Sears jobs. One of the more important things I want to mention is not only working at a store like this but also how to apply at Sears or get a job at a place such as this. One of the things you might want to consider if the Internet.
As we all know by now this is one of the most powerful tools anyone could use for just about anything. Some of us use it to market products and businesses, others use it for information, and even more others use it to find jobs at sears or other stores. But did you know you can actually post a resume online for this store? Well you can and its one of the most efficient ways of finding a job. For maximum exposure and for an opportunity to get the best possible job with your skill sets it is wise to spend a few minutes posting your resume on some of the sites that are the BEST job sites on the net. So how do you find these sites? Well there are the most obvious ones like Monster but personally I like finding some “unobvious” sites.
Sometimes a site like Monster can get overly crowded. So in this instance you might want to try and find a site that can give you a few ideas of different job sites to visit online. A few of the sites I found today were filled to the brim with all kinds of sites where you can post your resume online electronically! It is a known fact that more than 78 percent of all resumes processed by employers are now searched electronically for specific keywords before a human ever sees them. With so many employers relying on the Internet to search for potential candidates through keywords, then you should have a digital resume in as many highly searched places possible!
Of course you can also post for other jobs as well such as FedEx, Jiffy Lube, Home Depot, Dunkin Donuts and Marriott. So have a look – who knows what luck you may have on these sites. You just might have a job by next week but you will never know unless you give it a go! Top Ten Tips for Negotiating a Job Offer
Author: Alvah Parker Title: Top Ten Tips for Negotiating a Job Offer Article: One aspect of meaningful work is being compensated adequately for the work that you do. It is important then to negotiate a good job offer.
Several people have told me recently that they had job offers. I hope that means that the economy is improving. Some tell me they were willing to take less money then they were making before they got laid off.
If you are considering a lower paying offer, I’d like to make some recommendations. Before you jump at the offer ask for at least 24 hours to consider it. You will want to make sure that you get as good an offer as is possible.
Here are some tips on how to look at and negotiate the offer. Be ready to underscore the reasons that you are the ideal person for the job as you suggest possible ways for them to enhance their offer.
1. When you receive a job offer even if you really want to say “Yes!” immediately, ask for time to study the offer. Jumping at the job offer may make you seem desperate and give the hiring manager second thoughts. If negotiation is one of the skills required for the job, hiring managers will expect to see you in action.
2. Obtain or review salary data from several sources so that you know the salary range of others doing similar jobs in your region.
3. Analyze the job offer. Compare it to your list of must haves, like to haves, and what can be given up. Be sure you understand all parts of the offer not just the salary. What are the benefits, bonus possibilities, and opportunities for training and/or other education?
4. Think about all the parts of the job offer that you like. The place to start in the negotiation process is by listing what you appreciate about the job offer.
5. Maintain a congenial atmosphere as you negotiate. The person you are negotiating with could end up being your boss. You want to create a win-win situation. Do not make demands or give ultimatums unless you are willing to walk away. (Winning an ultimatum may put you under a great deal of stress to perform at a high level.)
6 Ask any clarification questions that you have so that you thoroughly understand benefits, compensation, bonus plan, training etc.
7. Go over specific items which you wish to negotiate asking first if it is negotiable before giving your proposed requirements. Companies often have some flexibility on parts of the job offer and not on others.
8. Explore performance expectations and job description. There may be negotiation possibilities at different compensation levels and for different responsibilities.
9. Remember negotiation means compromise. It is not likely you’ll get everything you want. You will want to be sure you get most of your “must haves” Do not give up anything that is critical to you!
10. To ensure you have the best offer for you, contact potential employers where you have pending desirable opportunities to let them know you are about to accept an offer. If you have multiple offers you may be able to use the other offers’ good points to improve the offer of your preferred employer. What You Need To Know For the Perfect Interview
Author: Michael Fleischner Title: What You Need To Know For the Perfect Interview Article: Once you’ve put together your resume, and either upload it to job boards or distribute it on your own, you should be preparing for the next challenge.
Interviewing for your desired position is the most important 30 minutes of your entire job search. Many individuals are nervous about or during the interview process, but you don’t have to be. As someone who works with job seekers on a daily basis, its evident that most challenging part of the process, for hiring managers and job candidates, is the interview itself.
The key to a successful interview is being prepared. Not only should you be familiar with the company and position, you must have a firm understanding of your skills and how they apply to the particular job you are interviewing for. In addition to knowing your stuff, rehearse, prepare, and perfect. Follow these steps before you interview:
First, research the company and the relevant industry. If you are hungry for a job, you may not really care where you work. But your interviewers are looking for someone who wants to be there and can be passionate about their mission. Knowing about the company can help you convey the interest that will help you stand out from the crowd.
Second, have some questions of your own to ask. As you’re researching the company, look for things to ask about: “I saw your press release about your expansion into the micro-widget market. What has the response been from your competitors” or more generically, “How do you think this company differs from your competitors in terms of work culture.” Asking questions of your own accomplishes three things. First, it shows your interest in the company. Second, it kills time. And third, it helps put you in control of the interview.
Third, consider your greatest accomplishments and how they might apply in your new role. Speak with confidence and assume that you already have the position. Can you relate your greatest accomplishments to that company’s current environment? What value can you deliver?
Fifth, think of the hardest questions an interviewer might ask. Think out your answers and rehearse them until they flow easily. Dont forget about questions like “what are your weaknesses” and “what do you want to be doing in five years?” As you’re pondering, consider what the interviewer might want to hear. Then, craft honest answers that will address the interviewers concerns.
Six, look your best. If you’re not sure what to wear, it’s better to over-dress than to under-dress. Doing so lets the interviewer know you understand business culture, and conveys that you really care about being there. The key is to look professional and dress for the position you want. How you dress says a lot about who you are and what you plan to accomplish.
Interviews can be stressful, but they’re simply conversations with other human beings. Prepare thoroughly, clean yourself up, and relax. Even if it doesn’t go as well as you hope, you’ll learn from it. Remember, practice and review to build confidence. Over time, you gain interviewing skills and confidence that can land you the job you want!
