Congratulations! Your resume was chosen out of a sea of candidates, and now you are getting ready to head to that all-important interview There are four basic components to an interview: preparation, bringing needed information, grooming, and the meeting itself You only get one chance to make a good first impression: here are some ways to get it right, and get that job
– Be prepared before you even walk through that door; this one simple step could make all the difference One great technique is to practice an interview with a friend or family member They may think of questions you might be asked that you never would have imagined
Find out as much as you can about the company you are applying to so that you will have a feel for its “tone” before you get there For example, are they extremely laid back or hyper serious? You can learn a lot about the business’s environment by visiting its website Find out what its mission statement and goals are so that you can mention them in the interview
Have a specific job in mind, and make mental notes about why your skills and talents will fit the job you are applying for It’s a guarantee this will come up in the interview: think through your answers beforehand so that you will be able to express them confidently when the time comes
– Before you leave the house, make sure you have all pertinent information with you These could include, but are not limited to: driver’s license or other government-issued picture I D, social security card, an extra resume, college transcripts (if needed), and a list of three references
Your references should not have been included with your resume: they are usually produced on demand, and chances are excellent you will be asked for them by the interviewer Make sure your references have given you permission, and include their name, company position, address, and phone number
– The importance of impeccable grooming cannot be over emphasized Give yourself a good once over in the bathroom before meeting the recruiter You should be clean and well-groomed, and dressed appropriately for the job you are applying for Little details such as making sure your shoes are shined make a great impression and give credibility to your professionalism Never, ever chew gum
– When you enter the interview, call the recruiter by name, look him in the eye, and give him a firm handshake Be polite and use proper English Follow his cues, and answer all questions confidently Issues such as salary and benefits should not be brought up by you at all
Be enthusiastic and friendly: really sell yourself and express your desire to contribute to the organization’s success Leave with a handshake, a thank you, and a smile; don’t forget a follow-up thank you note a day or so later Good luck!
