Reading The Pleasurable Escape
Author : Melissa Smith
It can take us to exotic lands, with powdery white beaches and clear azure skies It can take us back in time-even to prehistoric days-or forward to the Big Brother world of the 25th century It can fill our eyes with tears or make us laugh aloud Reading opens a window to the world, giving us a vision of things we never dreamed possible But, though you might not realize it, reading can also reduce your stress level
For one thing, reading can help with problem-solving, which, in and of itself, can relieve stress Say you are overweight, and that is contributing to your stress It seems that the more weight you gain, the more stressed out you become, and the more you eat By reading books about good nutrition, you can learn to plan meals that are low-cal and low-fat As a result, your weight problem might disappear-and your stress level will be greatly improved
Reading can also be relaxing When you curl up with a good book, you put the rest of the world at bay You take time out to travel to distant worlds, to learn about different time periods, and to expose yourself to out-of-this-world philosophies You are essentially taking a vacation of the mind-but one that can be relatively cost-free, especially if you live near a library
Reading can be a source of great hope, which can also help to relieve your stress Through biographies, you can read about famous people and learn how they overcame their struggles These stories of triumph might inspire you to seek ways to overcome the challenges in your own life Inspirational books can send your spirit soaring, enabling you to accomplish things you never dreamed possible
Of course, there are instances when reading can raise your stress level For instance, if you are studying for a test, or reading about tragedies in your local newspaper, you might find your stress level skyrocketing That is why it is important to be choosy when it comes to your reading material If you’re feeling stressed, pick up a book that will relax you-perhaps a travel book, a cookbook, or a book of poetry Resist the urge to read something that could simply make you feel more troubled
Self-help books are particularly effective in helping to reduce stress They allow you to explore your feelings and the triggers that lead to stress And they recommend such techniques as listening to soothing music, playing a musical instrument, playing cards, or engaging in deep breathing in order to deal with stressful situations
Or you might buy a book to learn about a hobby that can further reduce your stress Perhaps it’s needlepoint, woodworking, or crochet It may be origami, calligraphy, or stenciling You can learn how to refinish furniture, paint, renovate your kitchen, or redecorate your bathroom You can either build upon a skill you already have, or learn a new one from scratch
It has been shown that reading novels can relieve depression, so it should come as no surprise that such an activity can also reduce your stress When you read a novel, you travel to a distant place, metaphorically speaking This allows you to use your imagination freely as you try to picture characters and settings It’s a wonderful escape from the pressures of everyday living, and can allow you to return to your life feeling more refreshed
Reading also forces you to concentrate-concentration which might be otherwise lost due to stress As a result, you learn to exercise your mind-an exercise that can bear much fruit Thanks to your reading, you may notice you find it easier to remember things which can, in turn, reduce your stress level
If you find that you don’t like to read, you might start with graphic novels These comic book-like creations might appeal to you because of their interesting pictures Or you might simply start with glossy magazines In the long run, it doesn’t matter so much what you read as how much you read Read in the grocery line, at the bank, or while pedaling your stationary bike You’ll quickly find that the more you read, the more you will want to read, and the less stress you will feel

Unconditional Love A Realistic Relationship Goal or a Romantic Fantasy
Author : Deborrah Cooper
A young woman wrote in to my dating advice column recently and asked me: “What qualities are absolutely essential in a partner or in an ideal relationship? I have a pretty huge list and want to share some of them with you
o affectionate
o unconditional love for each other
o emotional support, connection and harmony
o caring, kind, compassionate
o easygoing, calm
o stability, commitment, loyal
o understanding, accepting (accepts me as I am)
o tolerant
o appreciation and love for each other
o enjoys intimacy regularly
o sense of humor
o positive outlook (happy and optimistic)
I am seeking this man and hope to find this type of love some day What do you think of my list?”
My response was probably not what she wanted to hear, but with almost 20 years of experience in dating and relationships industry, I know this young lady is headed for disappointment Her list is created from girlish childhood fantasies of the Knight swooping in to save the fair maiden Her list is to me nothing but fantasy from a young woman that has obviously never been married
Hey, I’m not saying that men cannot be honest, loving, committed and many of the things on the list above, don’t get me wrong! But real men are not perfect by any means Even if a guy did possess all of her listed qualities, they won’t be in evidence every single day!
He is going to mess up sometimes, piss her off, and definitely not be the man of her dreams So I can say with confidence that the man she dreams of only exists in soap operas, fairy tales and romance novels He is not a real man
If you are passing up great partners and dismissing them as unsuitable while you seek the romantic fantasy of “unconditional love” you need to stop Take that qualification off your list and get real Everything has conditions
And people will stop loving you if you do things on their “crossed the line” list, as well they should! Expecting that you can treat others any way you want and that they will keep loving you anyway is unrealistic
Why would anyone with good sense continue to love and care for someone that intentionally did something foul and disrespectful, with the full intent of harm or using them?
For instance, a woman who whines and cries claims to still love a man even though he hurt her children or parents, or committed a violent crime against someone’s daughter is a fool That man would have crossed all barriers of decency and humanity and he should be left in the dust
When involved in any relationship, we must all decide what our bottom line is Some people will continue to love and support their friends, children and family members even if they do something on the ‘crossed off’ list
However, my standard on this issue is this: Anyone that hits me, hurts my child, hurts my Mom or Dad or brothers gets no love from me! You steal my money you are out You do anything foul and funky with intent to harm me, you are out And I don’t care who you are
To me, unconditional love under those circumstances makes no sense and means you care more about someone else than you do yourself Sadly, the attitude of “I hate myself but I love you” goes hand in hand with a damaged sense of self and low self-esteem, which is almost epidemic in our society
I strongly suggest that all women eliminate the fantasy of unconditional love in their romantic relationships Establish boundaries for proper treatment and respect and enforce them 100%! NEVER waste your time or your loving heart loving someone that has clearly demonstrated that they do not love you back

How to Write a Resume for Non Profits
Author : Michael Fleischner
In most instances, applying for a non-profit job is similar to the application process for positions in the non-profit sector That is to say that both types of positions require the same core qualifications This includes: related professional experience, academic degrees, and availability to relocate or to travel to name a few
However, there are a few areas of expertise that are unique to non-profit By showcasing your past work history in regards to these areas, you will be substantially enhancing your candidacy and stand out compared to similar candidates applying for the same job
1 Grant Writing Securing funds through grants is one of the paramount duties of a non-profit concern Although most directors will want someone already skilled in this endeavor, if you have a graduate degree in English, and have researched successful grant proposals, you may want to create some sample grant proposals which you can submit with your resume By doing this, you may be considered for a support role within the organization
2 Fund Raising An equally important aspect of the non-profit sector Here, people skills and networking are at a premium If you are articulate, self-composed, and easily interact with people, mention those skills in your resume and then support those claims with details from your employment history even if it is not from a related fund-raising endeavor
For example, if you have been an outstanding sales representative and have won numerous awards, your past performance will enhance your candidacy
Also, if you have volunteered for community events or have assisted political candidates to reach their goals, showcase this information in the opening summary of your resume
3 Knowledge of 501(c)(3) accounting practices 501(c)(3) refers to the tax-exempt status for non-profit organizations Accountants or bookkeepers who are knowledgeable of this are sought out by the non-profit sector
However, even if you do not have experience in these accounting practices, by familiarizing yourself with the requirements or by taking related courses in the subject, you will be advancing your candidacy over others without similar knowledge
In addition to following the above guidelines, it is also wise to thoroughly research the organizations website to determine their non-profit culture Are they conservative? Or are they on the cutting edge and considered hip? Knowing, in advance, the way the organization is structured and the types of individuals that operate it will provide key information for the format and structure of your resume, so that it is effective and gets noticed

Turning Your Thoughts Into Things
Author : Jeff Baker
“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve” – W Clement Stone
How many times have you heard that hard work alone brings success? If you just work hard enough, you’ll be recognized and rewarded for your efforts
That might have worked fifty or sixty years ago but times have changed
Hard work alone does not insure success, it only insures that you’ve worked hard Many people have worked hard their entire lives yet retire with only a meager retirement, if anything at all
What, then, insures your success if hard work alone won’t?
It all starts with a single thought
Nothing, absolutely nothing you do from walking, eating, reading, knitting, writing a poem, or putting on your shoes happens until a thought, conscious or unconscious, occurs in your mind
In order to achieve any goal you must learn a single, basic concept; thoughts BECOME things
Thoughts are the foundation upon which you build the framework for attainment of your goal Every thought has a physical manifestation in your body; every thought produces physical substances called neuro-transmitting enzymes that have instant effects on how you feel and who you are at the cellular level
Don’t believe me?
Right now, think of biting into a big, juicy lemon or think about fingernails slowly running down a chalk board and tell me you didn’t have an immediate, physical response!
If you can have that kind of immediate response from a simple thought, just imagine what you can accomplish with a focused, burning desire backed by faith and persistence!
Life is NOT fair, there’s just life But that should be a comforting thought If life were fair all things would be equal and all people would be equal The logical conclusion is that there could be no social movement up or down, no bettering of yourself nor worsening, no getting healthier, just stagnation Because life isn’t fair it means you have the ability to control whether you improve your life or make it worse but at least you have the ability to make change
What about external influences which you have no control over? Viktor E Frankl, a concentration camp survivor, put it best in his book “Man’s Search for Meaning,”
“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitudes in any given circumstance ”
The only absolute freedom you have is choosing how you react to life And how you choose starts with a thought
Who you are right now is the sum total of what you’ve thought about up to this moment If you’re not satisfied with who you are right now, the good news is who you will be from now on is entirely up to you Change your thoughts and you can start changing yourself
Are you tired of not getting everything you want in life? Explore the Abundance Now System at http://www.AbundanceNow.com. You’ll learn how to achieve all your dreams though easy to follow step-by-step instructions.

Job Interview Tips when Applying for a Legal Assistant Position
Author : Amy Nutt
Interviewing for a legal assistant position is not very different from applying for other jobs As with any job interview, you should be well prepared, present yourself effectively, and make sure you leave a pretty good impression on your interviewer However, there are some key points that you have to remember if you want to increase your chances of landing a legal assistant position Below are some helpful tips for a successful interview
Do your homework
Before your interview, it is important that you do some research about the organization and gather information on the company’s background, performances and future plans Find out all that you can about the company through personal contacts, written materials, or the internet It is also best to know the biographies, accomplishments and legal practices of the attorneys that you might be working with in the future
During the interview, you should ask relevant questions to show your interviewer that you have indeed done sufficient research about the company Also, make sure you find out what kind of law the company is specializing in For example, if the position of legal assistant is for real estate law, you should have some knowledge about closings and real estate law
Refresh your memory
Most people tend to forget certain terminologies over time It’s either you have been out of work for a long time, or simply don’t encounter all the technical or legal terminologies in your previous or current job It’s time to go back to your old notes and books, and refresh your memory with some of the legal terminologies that the interviewer may use during the interview
Wear appropriate business attire
You should wear the appropriate business attire Though law firms have casual business attire, it is still advisable to look presentable during your interview Prepare the relevant materials that you will need to take with you, like a complete portfolio containing copies of your resume, transcript of records, certifications, references, and other pertinent materials that show your accomplishments
In addition, make sure that you have a pen and a piece of paper with you so that you can take down notes during the interview
Be on time
Show your enthusiasm to join the company and let your interviewer know that you are very interested in what they do and what they can offer In the legal world, time is very important Never arrive late for your interview; you should make it a point to arrive at least 15 minutes early This will show the interviewer that you are serious about the job you are applying for
Stress on your best qualities and always stay calm
Try to present yourself as a person who is helpful, thoughtful and trustworthy Bear in mind that legal assistants are required to keep confidential business information, so being prudent is very important Remember to maintain eye contact at all times, listen attentively to the interviewer’s questions and take time to organize your thoughts Make sure you take part in an interesting conversation about the firm, your work, and yourself Relax and stay calm throughout the interview
Relate qualifications to the need of the company
When you are asked questions about your qualifications or experience as a legal assistant, you should direct your answers to what you know about the company, and relate your strengths and accomplishments to the needs of the company
Give specific examples of your credentials as a legal assistant, and if possible, give a complete account of the different projects you have done in the past, your responsibilities in those projects and the importance of those projects to your position as a legal assistant in your previous working environments
Do not pass judgment on your former employer
Never say anything awful about your current or previous employers Always keep in mind that the legal world is very small Who knows, the person you are spiteful of may be a friend or relative of your interviewer
Show interest in the position you are applying for
As the interview comes to a close, you should let your interviewer know that you are very much fascinated with the position that the company is offering and inquire about the next step that you will need to take to complete your application It is also good to ask when you can expect to hear from them about your application At the same time, don’t forget to shoot a thank you email within 24 hours after your interview
One of the top Toronto Colleges offers Legal Assistant classes for you to succeed in the Law area.
