So You Want A Career As A Restaurant Manager

Even if you’re currently a restaurant’s resident dishwasher, it is still very possible for you to climb the ladder to the very top with hard work, persistence and the right set of skills A lot of restaurant operators seek people who already have ample experience in nearly all restaurant duties, so if you’ve been rotating on different tasks for the past months or years, you already have one foot in the door
However, given the present times, most owners are eyeing potential candidates who have formal qualifications to fill supervisory and managerial roles in the company While experience also carries a lot of weight, job opportunities are likely to be more open and better if you have an associate or bachelor’s degree to your name, particularly those that have something to do with restaurant and institutional food service management
Understanding Your Work Conditions
A restaurant manager’s daily life is often very hectic and subject to high levels of pressure Thus, a considerable amount of resilience, stamina and physical, mental and emotional endurance is required of you Since evenings and weekends are the most busy times for restaurants, you should be prepared to work during late nights and weekends It is not uncommon for restaurant managers to work for around 50 to 60 hours per week, and you will most likely be the first to arrive and the last to leave everyday
A restaurant manager’s work hours and job nature are also highly intermittent, as you might have to fill in for an absent employee, no matter what his job designation is, at the last minute Hence, it is very important that you know all the restaurant’s operations inside out and from top to bottom, as being a restaurant manager does not just mean sitting behind a nice desk and making chitchat with customers There will be times that you will have to perform all sorts of “dirty work”
The pressures of making sure everything is in order almost always happen simultaneously with a number of other responsibilities Whenever there are problems, it will be your duty as restaurant manager to seek a solution with the least possible disruptions to other operations, particularly in the serving of customers This can be further aggravated by uncooperative and stubborn staff, as well as irate clients You have to have a lot of patience for this job if you want to pull through sanely and in one piece
Duties of a Restaurant Manager
A restaurant manager’s daily duties are not to be underestimated Apart from the usual tasks of selecting what to place on the menu and determining each of their prices, ensuring quality service and proper food preparation and the efficient utilization of supplies, taking responsibility for the rising number of human resource and administrative tasks are also part of the job description
Typically, the management team is composed of a general manager, one or two assistant managers (depending on the size of the place) and one executive chef, who takes charged of all kitchen operations Often, in the case of small restaurants, the manager and the executive chef is just one person In the case of major fast food chains, there are a number of assistant managers to supervise the different shifts
All of the members of the managerial team should expect to be working from the moment the restaurant opens until it closes at all days of operation Because a manager is responsible for all, he does not have the liberty to just skip work because he doesn’t feel like going Restaurant management, though accompanied by considerable perks, is a full service job that requires full time commitment
Managing the Menu and Supplies
It is a restaurant manager’s job to determine menu items This is often doen with the help of the executive chef and will be decided on based on the past popularity of certain meals and the likely number of customers who will patronize it Sometimes, a new dish is introduced in order to accommodate and avoid the wastage of unserved food How the menu is arranged also depends on what raw ingredients are in season or simply for the sake of variety and novelty
Managers also review each dish to find out how much it costs to prepare them, taking into consideration certain overhead expenses, to know what price best represents its value Items on the meu should also be done ahead of time so managers can estimate what supplies are needed and when these should be bought and delivered Upon delivery, it is the manager’s duty to check the content and evaluate their quality, particularly the meats, fruits, vegetables, fish, baked items and poultry
Grocery items are not the only supplies that should be monitored Tableware, linens, cooking supplies, furniture and cleaning materials should also be checked regularly Waste disposal and pest control should be addressed, as well
Hiring the Right People
How smoothly a restaurant runs depends a lot on the people who work there That’s why it is important that managers hire the right people for the job It is the manager’s responsibility to explain the company’s rules and regulations to all staff members and to provide the training necessary Employee work schedules are also under his jurisdiction
Because restaurants at peak hours are considered one of the most stressful working environments in the business world, managers should be able to exercise maximum grace under pressure and handle problems with the least disturbance
Administrative Duties

I think it’s a profound and beautiful quote that sums up the mindset of truly successful people You see the movers and shakers of this world don’t have to be told, they know that they create their destiny and they wouldn’t have it any other way This “knowing” is embedded in the core of their being They are the director and star in their life story They attract the people and resources they need to create their blockbuster
Successful people accept full responsibility for their lives and, in so doing, have the ‘ability to respond’ to situations in their lives instead of react to them Average folk also attract people and resources into their lives but they do so in an unconscious level This results in them not always attracting what they want They are inclined to blame other people and circumstances for their dilemma and end up reacting to the events in their lives instead of orchestrating them
In fact, that very word “orchestrating” reminds me of yet another quote You see, we tend to spend so much time doing that we forget the art of being I believe that we are spiritual beings having a physical existence here on Earth and that; ultimately, the spirit is more powerful than the physical body However, spirit works through us as physical beings and the best way to facilitate this is through quietening the mind, the conduit between body and spirit For many people there is such a clamour in their minds that nothing positive can get through
“When you quieten the mind, the symphony begins ”
Yes, it is the mind which is usually the barrier to our achieving our heart’s desire This is why, in so many personal development or self improvement programmes there is great emphasis on developing the right mindset
Imagine the mind as a tunnel between body and spirit What does your tunnel look like? It is light, spacious and well-maintained or is it dark and dingy, narrow and in a derelict condition? What does your tunnel sound like? Can you hear soft, calming melodies or perhaps soothing sounds of nature or are the sounds disconcerting, loud and raucous? What does it feel like in your tunnel? Does it feel warm and inviting or cold and inhospitable?
So many people are looking for answers outside of themselves when the answer lies within Yet we seem afraid to delve deep inside and it seems that we are incredulous of the magnitude of our hidden power Indeed, it is said that our greatest fear is in the ownership of our unlimited power
I spoke to a friend recently who was very worried about the state of a company she was involved in She was so worried that she felt everything might “go down the pan” I stopped her in her tracks right there and said
“That’s the worse thing you can think I agree that the situation is serious but as soon as you start thinking that it’s ‘game over’ that is exactly what will happen We need to take a realistic look at the situation and we need to develop a game plan ”
She was focussing on the ‘evidence’ around her that the company was not in a healthy state However, all this was resulting in was producing more of the same negative results To turn the company around she needed to turn around and look at how she wanted the company to be, then devise a plan and implement it
It sounds simplistic and I know that there are times when the best thing is to wrap up a company but I knew, from experience, that this need not be the end result in this situation However, success depended upon the players in this particular game being able to keep their focus on the goal
When we look at our current results, maybe the lack and limitation that exists in our lives, we are applying Newtonian Physics that which describes the visible effects However, Newtonian Physics is just the tip of the iceberg and while most of us have never even seen an iceberg we accept that nine-tenths of an iceberg lies beneath the surface
The unseen portion lies within the realms of Quantum Physics and is much more powerful However, because Quantum Physics deals with the invisible cause we have much more difficulty in believing in it Yet believe in it we must or perish That submerged portion sank the Titanic and it will surely sink you if you do not learn how to harness its power and use it to your benefit rather than your detriment

Consciously Model Patterns of Excellence

Some people acknowledge the power of modeling; however, they feel uncomfortable about copying someone else’s style They say, ‘I am not comfortable with this as I feel like I am not being myself I am trying to be someone else instead’
As a result they deprive themselves of the power of modeling excellence and producing exceptional results in a short time
Well, let me ask you a question
Think about the behaviors and physiology that you exhibit right now Where did they come from? Were you born with your gestures, mannerisms, tone of voice and behaviors? No You behave the way you do now because ever since you were a kid, you had been unconsciously modeling the behaviors and physiologies of the people
around you
Do you realize that the way you speak or react to things may sometimes be similar to your parents or your close friends? And, the mannerism or gestures you exhibit could have come from people whom you admired (for whatever reason), and unconsciously adopted as your own So, you have already been modeling your whole
life, this is nothing new
The problem is that in the past, you did not consciously model people of excellence As a result, you may have unconsciously modeled a lot of ineffective behaviors and negative states of the people around you
For example, if you are a poor mixer or ineffective communicator, it is because you (unconsciously) modeled poor speakers and communicators when you were young
If you are a poor decision maker and constantly find yourself feeling anxious and lacking in confidence, it is because you have unknowingly adopted the patterns from your friends or family Haven’t you ever behaved in a certain way and suddenly realized,’oh my gosh! I’m becoming mother or father!’
So, isn’t it time you start to consciously delete ineffective models of the past and start modeling and adopting patterns of people who exhibit excellence instead?
Another point to understand is that modeling is not just about copying It is about replicating and then improving on what you have modeled, or modifying it to suit your personal style
For example, if you were a woman and you were to model the physiology of a male speaker exactly, it may not come off that well You may have to modify elements of that person’s physiology to suit your personality
Model the best patterns, combine and adapt them to make them your own That is what modeling is all about

The Importance of Goal Setting

The whole point of setting a goal is to help you bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be If you set goals and work toward them diligently, you can have all the things you want People who set and achieve their goals are people who’ve decided what they want, committed themselves to going after it, and haven’t let anything stand in their way, short of violating the rights of others
A proper goal gives you all the incentive you need to grow in your awareness of being a perfect expression of an Infinite power, designed for excellence and abundance As you become more welcoming and aware of your relationship with God, and of all the potential that’s been built into you, you’ll function more effectively in harmony with the laws of the universe Living in synch with all of this will yield results you’ve never dreamed possible
They say that awareness is curative It gives deep meaning to life because it spells the end of your robotic existence, no more walking in the deep ruts formed by your harmful programming and counterproductive thought life These old ways of thinking aren’t ways you’ve chosen, they were planted in your heart when you were young by your parents, teachers, and religious leaders While some of these programs serve you well, many of them are harmful and ready to be replaced The old way of “living” has kept you from a truly abundant life
But, in order to truly change, your old habits have to be replaced with new, healthy practices Having a solid goal in place serves as a constant help as you do this In fact, without a specific goal, you’re unlikely to ever make a significant change in your life While you’re on your way toward achieving your goals, you learn to choose which thoughts you’ll allow into your mind You’ll see the connection between these thoughts, the feelings and attitudes they produce, and ultimately the results they yield It’s not something someone else can do for you
Ever notice how your life never really stays the same? You’re either improving it or damaging it, your actions aren’t neutral As a spiritual being, your spirit constantly seeks expansion and greater expression When this deep desire is thwarted, you experience a feeling of dissatisfaction That feeling is unpleasant enough to serve as a good motivator We hate feeling unfulfilled, and work diligently to escape such an unpleasant feeling We’ll do pretty much anything to satisfy this need
This need for fulfillment goes way beyond just things and money, although they are important They give you comfort and opportunity It goes beyond happy feelings or a sense of peace, although they’re important, too Our drive for complete fulfillment includes these things, but goes so much further, it’s a deep desire for a big purpose, something that catapults you into creativity, into meaningful and effective service
Great, you were created to pursue worthy goals How do you set them? How do you go after them? What can you do to make sure you achieve these grand goals?
Half the battle with goal-setting is determining exactly what it is that you want Sounds easy enough, you answer that question just fine at a restaurant, on your birthday, when you get your hair cut But when it comes to the big “what do you want” question, minds go blank We don’t know what’s okay to ask for What’s too much? Am I overreaching? How am I going to feel if I ask for something that’s beyond possibility?
Wow, such bad programming we pick up! Ask any little kid what they want to be when they grow up and you’ll hear answers like: the President, an astronaut, a gazillionaire, a cat, a rock star Nothing seems impossible; nothing seems like it’ll come back to haunt you if it doesn’t work out
Deciding what you want is risky Telling someone else can feel uncomfortable You might feel like you’ve got to preface it with something like, “Please don’t tell anyone, Can you keep a secret, I know it sounds crazy, but” But you know what? People who set and achieve awesome goals are risk takers, they’ve learned to be They know that they’ve got the privilege and duty to design their own lives, make their own decisions They dare to dream, and dream big The power is in going after what you want, not in going after what you need

If you are like most people, you are worried about your employment prospects in the future This is natural as you may see others getting laid off all around you It seems as if every time you pick up the paper or go online, there is another large company folding and massive amounts of people out of work You will want to keep your resume updated and be prepared to go on a job search if need be, but the job crunch does not have to happen to you You need to understand what employers are looking for and are willing to go above and beyond in your daily work Here are some tips on keeping your job and salary while others are getting laid off from their jobs:
Do not be dead wood
Employers that are looking to restructure the company and cut back are going to be getting rid of what used to be called the dead wood These are the people who have jobs that can be combined with other positions and eliminated Ask yourself if you have a job that can be eliminated with your work given to someone else in the department If the answer is yes, then you may be considered to be part of the dead wood Act quickly to rid yourself of this status by seeking out more work Offer to help others during the course of the day and be willing to take on new responsibilities
Always be busy
Never tell your employer that you have nothing to do or let them catch you being idle at your desk While asking for more work from the boss sounds like a good idea, it can backfire on an employee The boss may feel that the employee is not needed and may recommend them in the case of restructuring Always look busy and never let the boss catch you playing on the computer, making personal calls on the phone or not appearing to be doing something constructive Be willing to assist others with their work without making it look as if you have none of your own
Spread your wings
Be willing to take on new responsibilities and learn different skills to make you a more valuable employee to your company The more you know, the better off you are in this job market While companies may be laying some employees off, they will keep those that are multi skilled and willing to step outside the box to take on additional responsibilities Do not be afraid to spread your wings in this employment climate
Skip vacation time
Do not take your vacation at this time If you are unsure about your job, taking a vacation may signal to the company just how well they can do without you No employee is indispensable and if the office gets along fine without you – as they will with any employee on vacation – you could be targeted for dismissal Do not take time off, if you can help it, for vacations or sick days during this market
If you want to keep your job while others are getting laid off, the best thing that you can do is to be at work everyday, be willing to take on new responsibilities, help others and stay busy
