Engineering Careers A Diversity of Roles
Author : john mce
When we think of engineers, we tend to think blue overalls and physical jobs like building or mending trains, planes and ships! In reality, engineering roles are found in many businesses and industries Yes, there are engineers in transport and also in construction, but you find them in industries as varied as food, cosmetics, medicine and many more
There are still many jobs in traditional engineering sectors, but many engineers work in offices, laboratories or studios Engineering today is closely linked with technology and many engineering roles now evolve around the latest technological advances
Branches of engineering include:
Aerospace and defence
This involves working with aircraft and space technology and engineers in this branch
research, design, maintain, test, develop and manufacture civil and military aircraft, missiles, weapons systems, satellites and space vehicles Most engineers specialise in a particular area, such as research, design, or maintenance
Automotive
Automotive engineers are involved in almost every aspect of designing cars and trucks, and the systems they rely on, from the initial concepts right through to manufacturing them They will design the components, the vehicle and the process to make it
Chemical
Many of our everyday items, such as food, toiletries, medicine, fabrics, began as something else Chemical engineers take our basic natural resources, such as petroleum, plants and minerals, and work out efficient ways to convert them to the products we are familiar with, such as shampoo or painkillers This field is growing even more diverse, covering areas from biotechnology and nanotechnology to mineral processing
Civil
Military engineering was the first engineering discipline and civil engineering the second; it was defined simply to separate it from military It deals with the design and construction of public and private works, such as infrastructure (roads, railways, water supply and treatment etc ), bridges and buildings It has several sub-disciplines, including:
Environmental engineering – dealing with ways to improve the environment (air, water, and/or land resources) and reduce pollution
Structural engineering – dealing with the analysis and design of structures, like buildings
Transport engineering – dealing with the safe and efficient movement of people and goods
Electrical
This is a wide category, encompassing electronics, telecommunications and power engineering Electrical engineers might find themselves involved in the design and maintenance of a power grid, designing radar guns, researching new ways to use microchips or communication networks or many other applications and activities
Mechanical
Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines It involves analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems It could be designing, testing, establishing reasons for breakdown and could be working with such diverse systems as cranes, cars, robots, lifts or factory conveyor belts
Career requirements
Engineering is the practical application of science You will need to be good at and enjoy science and mathematics subjects to be an engineer You are likely to enjoy finding solutions to challenging problems, to be practical and a good communicator
It does require study and qualifications to get to the higher levels Skilled engineers are highly sought after and there are many opportunities for them, especially for those with flexible skills or a strong grasp of new technology And as there are so many fields, engineers could work in almost any industry

Insist on the Best for Your Career
Author : Donald Mitchell
I remember looking for a job just before I finished graduate school I poured over lists of companies that were located where I wanted to live, and I dreamed a lot about what it might be like to work in different industries
I was reminded of when several my friends graduated with MBA degrees the preceding year and the goals they had
One handsome, tall fellow wanted to become a vice president of an airline I asked him why, and he told me that you could become a vice president of an airline at an earlier age than in other industries Smiling, he also mentioned that as a single man he liked that there more unmarried young women working for airlines than could be met in most other industries
A married couple had more modest ambitions: to get jobs in the same city that would provide opportunities for challenging careers If the city was a nice place to live, that was an extra benefit When both gained jobs in Seattle, Washington, they were thrilled
Another man had spent a lot of time as a sailor on a nuclear submarine before graduate school: Any job that didn’t involve working underwater was welcome to him
All of that career planning sounds pretty reasonable, doesn’t it? Little did I know that we were aiming very low
A recent MBA graduate helped me see that much higher goals can be set It was quite an eye opener Let me tell you his story
Ramesh Venkatraman was born in a beautiful village in a part of southern India that is well known for entrepreneurship in exporting products around the world Accompanying his father on professional trips expanded his geographic horizons at a young age His early schooling, college, and graduate studies were undertaken in a semi-urban setting renowned for its textile exports Having absorbed so many influences, you might think that he entered a career that connected back to those origins, but that was not the case
After completing a master’s degree in science, Mr Venkatraman was preparing to join a Ph D program; however, he joined the Indian space program instead, expanding his perspective on what can be accomplished You are probably expecting to read that Mr Venkatraman then became an astronaut but that’s not what happened
Instead, his focus turned earthward and outward: He entered the information technology (IT) industry and began work in the United States, gaining important skills in IT at firms like KPMG, FedEx, Compaq, BvOI, and ABN AMRO Bank Supremely talented, his quickly rose through the ranks from project manager to program manager to vice president
In the corporate world, he came across many talented individuals who caused him to raise the bar on his dreams and aspirations, directly and indirectly tapping into his hidden talents
One fine day, he learned that a highly respected colleague was an MBA and a Ph D student at Rushmore University The colleague shared that he would soon be moving into a strategic management function from a technology management position, and the colleague became head of strategy and planning for a leading financial institution
Encouraged by that example and wanting to build on his IT success, Mr Venkatraman decided to earn an MBA degree He hoped his studies would add the skills and knowledge he would need to become a generous entrepreneur, one who would share any wealth gained with employees and other stakeholders
He also selected Rushmore, primarily because he would have more freedom there to tailor his studies and courses to meet his personal objectives The freedom he gained provided lots of motivation to learn, and Mr Venkatraman graduated a little more than a year later
Asked just before his graduation what his goals for using his MBA degree were, he reported that he now wanted to found a billion-dollar business in a short amount of time Wow! What a contrast that goal was with what my friends and I had thought about at the same stage in our business training
Curious about the shift, I asked Mr Venkatraman to tell me more about how he decided on this new direction He responded that the course work at Rushmore made him realize that greater things were possible than he had considered before Wanting to help others, he also began to appreciate that the more successful he was as an entrepreneur, the more people he could help as a philanthropist, a role he hadn’t thought about playing before
He now feels confident that he can accomplish that aggressive goal and is working hard to achieve it He is also considering earning a Ph D from Rushmore
Naturally, few people accomplish the full scale of what they hope to achieve Often, they accomplish quite a bit less
Even if Mr Venkatraman falls far short of his new goals, he will probably accomplish more than he would have by merely fulfilling his pre-MBA goals By learning the power of thinking carefully about what he wants to accomplish, his education served him better than mine did
What are the lessons for you?
Are you insisting on the best from your career? If not, why not?
Ask yourself what the best could be for your career if you shoot for the top Then get busy!

International Relocation Salary Conversion Calculator To Your Rescue
Author : Abhishek Agarwal
If you stick to a job in the USA for a few years, you probably will be in a comfortable position after getting a few raises But let us imagine for a minute that your superiors would like to relocate you to a different outlet of the company, and that too in another country! Well, nobody likes being uprooted by some body else from a land that they are comfortable living in for so many years since birth But let us try and look on the bright side of things
For one, your company will probably offer you a better position and a raise for taking up the offer And the, you will be wondering about what your salary would look like in another country This can be quite tricky to figure out They may pay you a small incentive but will that be enough to make you a living of the same standard that you have now, in a country like England?
On the other hand, you may imagine you would be very well off with the same pay in a poorer country like India Well, it is not that simple after all, and you may make use of a salary comparison calculator to get an idea of how it will fall out for you You could find a few salary comparison meters on the internet, free for all to make use of Although they may not be highly accurate, at least they will give you a basic idea of what you can expect
The first variable you need to input into any calculator is the tract that you come from Then you need to input your current take home salary and the current location as well Finally you enter the name of the country that you are going to, and there you go, you are now ready to view the result
The resulting answer is the amount you would NEED to make that would equal the salary in the United States, or wherever it is that you are from Say you entered 40,000 and you get an answer of 60,000, it means that you should demand a salary of 60,000 because the cost of living is that much higher in that country On the other hand, if you get an answer of 30,000 then I guess you are on the safe side, and will have a higher than current standard of living with the same salary in that new country
You could find a lot of such salary comparison calculating services on the net Just make sure you use a well known site so you get the best results And don’t pay for it, its free on most of those sites This is a very simple step you can take to get a better idea of whether the contract to relocate that has been handed over to you is worth it, or not

Consider A Career In Accounting
Author : Shaun Parker
Accounting can be seen widely as the measuring and collating of economic information Its purpose is to allow decisions to be made in an informed and knowledgeable manner in the economic sphere A variety of jobs fall under the general title of accounting and a career in this field can be seen as lucrative and rewarding
Although many, due to its insistence on attention to detail many view it as a rather uninteresting career path to follow, this however is a fallacy and today the accounting industry is thriving in Britain offering a wide variety of jobs to choose from
All jobs tied to the subject of accounting have meticulousness at their heart; roles such as payroll officer, credit control manager and financial analyst are all contained within the sphere and offer a career with good earning potential and jobs that provide a high level of responsibility
Viewed by many as the language of business it offers those who wish to undertake the career, the opportunity to become fluent in this language Understanding fully the business markets is vital to anyone who wishes to make it in modern industry
Accounting can be defined in a variety of disciplines each with its own assortment of jobs Financial accounting often involves recording the financial information of a company and producing reports to give information on the company’s financial situation and outlook For companies who are publicly listed this is usually vital information as shareholders wish to know how and where their money is being invested
Another discipline can be seen as management accounting, although performing much the same task as financial accounting the reports made are limited to the small number of decision makers at the top of a company, without giving shareholders the full picture
Jobs in tax accounting are numerous, this element of accounting deals mostly with producing up to date advice and services in how to respond to the constant changes in tax legislation This is where good accounting services can be worth their weight in gold as taxation laws can offer loopholes to those knowledgeable enough to take advantage of them
Further jobs in the world of accounting can be found in the separate but also linked field of auditing This generally comes in two forms, either internal or external, internal auditing is an in house method of finding discrepancies in stock and funds where as external auditing offers the same sort of services but from a completely impartial source The jobs available in this sector can be found in a huge amount of industries, from the world of financial banking to the hotel and hostelry industry
Part of finding well paid accounting jobs may involve acquiring qualifications, although these can very often be gained by undertaking apprenticeships with existing accounting companies In Britain a number of qualifications exist, generally resulting in the label ‘chartered’
A quantity of institutions can issue this label including the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Chartered Accountants
These institutes act more like trade unions and although resembling a professional body, accountants are not forced to register themselves Unlike institutions such as the medical register and law society, bodies for accountants do not have the power to stop an accountant from trading due to bad practise
Accounting can definitely be seen as a worthwhile career path If you feel you have the attributes of diligence and conscientiousness it could well be the right choice for you What can certainly be asserted is that jobs in accounting vary greatly and offer a wide selection of job roles that provide career opportunities in a range of industries
Shaun Parker knows the accountancy industry intimately and can advice on what kind of accounting jobs to look for. To find out more please visit Need a Job

Don t Just Get a Job Get a Dream Career
Author : Anita Web Weaver
There is a lot of hidden damage being created by today’s economy Like free radicals that damage our organs and cells, the fear racing through our world psyche is causing people to pull back, hunker down, and put their dreams away
That’s as true for the person who has lost their job as it is for the person who has decided to stay put, and not go for their dream career
Our psyches are invaded by the fear parasite We tell ourselves that now is not the time to go for that dream career Or, instead of focusing on getting meaningful work, we focus on just getting a job – any job
It’s the wrong approach in a fearful time
Think about it – what happens to the rabbit when he freezes as the hunter sees him? That’s right He’s dispatched to rabbit heaven – pronto!
What happened to companies like C W Post when, during the Great Depression, they pulled back on marketing? Right again – they lost market share and customer trust They never again regained their market position, especially relative to their main competitor – Kellogg
The story of the Kellogg Company is very different
Kellogg increased their marketing and outreach efforts during this time As a result, they increased their market share and customer brand loyalty – which continues nearly 80 years later
Proctor and Gamble created their biggest growth ever during the Great Depression They sponsored shows on the new medium of radio and, at one point, were sponsoring over 21 programs Their primary product was soap, and today’s ‘Soap Operas’ are a direct descendant of those early, serialized radio programs
As an aside, P&G’s sponsorship led directly to the growth and popularity of radio as the major entertainment medium of the time
What’s the point?
The point is that pulling back on your efforts to develop a meaningful career during economically stressful times is exactly the wrong thing to do Here’s why
When you allow fear to dominate your life, you become fearful of going forward, you play small You’re afraid to look for new ideas, trends and possibilities; you may find yourself ‘sucking up’ to the boss you dislike just so he won’t think of you first if the time comes to reduce staff
Or, you may be afraid of trying new things at work You basically hide out, hoping no one will notice you, so your productivity suffers
You may experience increasing stress that manifests in headaches, stomach aches, more colds, lethargy, increased fatigue or sleeplessness
Finally, you begin to feel that your dream of purposeful work and a dream career are not within your reach – and you give up How sad is that?
But there’s another way
I’ve often said that action trumps fear – every time!
If you want that meaningful career, take action!
If you hate your current job, take action!
If you want a work purpose that matches your values and vision for your life, take action!
Think about this: during every time of stress, downturn, difficulty, there are also hidden opportunities, needs and problems to be solved Those who survive best, and even prosper in difficult times, are those who look for the opportunities – and take action on them
Here are some things to consider
Let’s say that you’ve lost your job and your area, say warehousing, is becoming increasingly consolidated Ask yourself, “What are my other talents and abilities? What other areas am I interested in? Should I look into additional training or schooling? Where are the resources that could help support my getting additional training?”
During difficult times, the government offers MORE, not LESS support through funded programs and training Find out where they are in your community Use them
What if you are in a job you dislike Does that mean you need to stay there – stuck until the economy recovers?
NO!!!
Instead, look at the problems and needs created by this economic situation What skills, talents and abilities do you have that could meet the current needs?
What contribution do YOU want to make that will make you feel that your work has purpose and meaning? What legacy do YOU want to leave? How do you want to be remembered? Start from these questions and then begin to take action to move in the direction of your dreams
In 1981 Bill Gates said, “”I think there is a world market for maybe five computers ”
Even Bill Gates didn’t always see the potential in computers What potential do you have, do you see that could make a big difference?
Greater problems and greater challenges mean needing people who can solve those problems and address those challenges
There’s plenty of room for you
My niece just last week received three job offers Her husband was astounded, but I wasn’t She has developed her talents; she wrote down the description of her ideal job and she got it – even to hours that would accommodate her young family
It’s out there Look Take action Believe in your career dreams! Don’t let them die Live your life from the potential of that life, rather than from the fear of it
Here’s to your career dreams

Exciting New Training For Builders
Author : India Cooper
We all know there’s a shortage of builders and tradesmen in the UK Well now the Government and the industry have got together to tackle the problem in a progressive way that should reap rewards for everyone involved
The National Skills Academy for Construction is addressing the need for well trained builders by establishing training programmes linked to large construction projects There will be no dedicated training college built – trainees will work on-site with experienced builders to gain the necessary skills and know-how
In an industry largely made up of sole traders and small firms who cannot afford to commit to training budgets, this is a positive step forward It also allows the fragmented industry to come together for training Being part of a large construction project will put learning and instruction into context and will allow students to understand the bigger picture, and not just their niche area
Of course this isn’t the first time on-site training has been given in this sector – the building of Canary Wharf in London is famous for having helped train many budding tradesmen But now this method of producing good builders is being formalised and will become the norm rather than a one-off opportunity for a few lucky hopefuls
A national training programme requires some structure Regional Partnerships are being established in the Government’s nine regions of England and in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland These partnerships include all the relevant stakeholders, including employers, colleges, regional development agencies and Jobcentre Plus representatives Training and Education will then be provided by those stakeholders on a project by project basis Employers will identify educational and training needs and these will be addressed on site and in mobile on site training centres, rather than traditional colleges An Academy Advisory Board will be made up of stakeholders and will manage and deliver the aims of the Academy At national level there will be a web-based exchange of innovative ideas for furthering training
The Academy should benefit building contractors, large and small, and individuals as well as clients and local communities The fact that employers will be at the heart of training means that real skills gaps will be addressed and the chances of good permanent work for individuals will be greatly increased
High profile construction projects have already been able to benefit from the initiative The Bishopsgate Development in the City of London was the first such project, in 2006 Others include a school building project in Manchester and now the Olympic Village in Thames Gateway They are all large, high profile schemes that provide ample opportunity for training and innovation
The race to get the Olympic Village ready by 2012 may of course drain tradesmen and builders away from other regions But that only accentuates the need for good training so that key projects elsewhere can be completed Over the next four years London will absorb a disproportionate number of workers in the industry, not only for the Olympic project itself but also for improvements to the city’s infrastructure These include upgrades to various underground lines, in anticipation of increased use during the Summer of 2012 and beyond
Of course for some individuals traditional college and apprenticeship schemes will work best and for a number of sole traders this can be a cost effective way of getting some extra help Particularly for men and women who want to concentrate on domestic projects this may be preferable to learning on the job on large building developments But at least there is now a choice and training can be tailored to an individual’s and a project’s needs And that will help the industry as a whole in a time of building boom
Expert builder India Cooper explains the positive step forward taken by both the Government and industry to tackle the shortage of builders within the UK. To find out more please visit http://www.ratedpeople.com/find/builder

The Right Way To Think About A Career Change
Author : James Copper
There are many people who want a career change, but never make any attempts in that direction because they do not know which type of changes they actually need and which career option is a better alternative for them They just don’t know what they want to do This is basically because of their boxed-in thinking that prevents them from thinking differently Following are some of the tips that will help you generate a wide array of new career ideas Lets go exploring
Focus On The Key Themes, Not The Job Titles
Job titles can be misleading Therefore, if you are looking for a career change, you should look out for the possibilities based on key themes and not on job titles If you know what you want your dream job to involve, you can easily find all the opportunities out there
Make A List Of Things That You Don’t Want To Do
It is good that you are clear about the specific things that you want to do after a career change But, it is also equally important for you to be aware of the things that you don’t want to do This is a much easier task, especially if you hate your current job You just have to identify the issues that you find annoying However, if the no-to-do list is too long, ascertain if it is always going to be “NO” under all circumstances After all, the idea is not to reject career options in a knee-jerk manner
Refine The List Of The Things You Want To Do
If you are sharing your idea of a career change with your friends and family, they may start offering you an array of suggestions So, you have to be very careful here Even if you listen to everybody, you must act according to your own mind Make sure that the to-do list includes the things that you really want – don’t add anything mindlessly to this list just because someone else considers it as the best choice for you Take your own decisions
Introspect And Reinvent Yourself
Before you go ahead with a career change, rewind the tape on your career life Think about the mistakes you had committed before Review those circumstances when things had started to go wrong Was it your fault? Try to reinvent yourself Begin the new inning of your career with a fresh approach
However, always remember that a new career does not always have to be an exceptional, spectacular or grandiose one It is great that you have a wide vision, but at the same time, you should also focus on the small changes that can bring productive results The basic idea is to attain the kind of fulfillment that you want in your career
Overall, if you follow the above tips, you will be able to explore the wealth of career change possibilities that are out there
